Clear Quartz — heals and cleanses?

Citrine — attracts wealth and prosperity?

Does crystal really work? It is a frequently asked question.

I read an article from time magazine a while ago.

Here is how the scientists and doctors said…

Researchers have carried out few conventional studies on crystals. Among the few, one research in 2001 concluded that the power of these minerals is “in the eye of the beholder.”

In the study, which has not been published but was presented at the European Congress of Psychology in Rome, 80 people filled out a questionnaire designed to gauge their level of belief in “paranormal” phenomena.

Later, the study team asked everyone to meditate for five minutes while holding either a real quartz crystal or a counterfeit crystal made of glass.

After that, the participants answered questions about the sensations they had felt while meditating with the crystals.

It was found that both the real and fake crystals produced similar sensations. And people who tested high in the paranormal-belief questionnaire tended to experience greater sensations than those who scoffed at the paranormal.

“We found that lots of people claimed that they could feel odd sensations while holding the crystals, such as tingling, heat and vibrations, if we’d told them in advance that this is what might happen,” said Christopher French, a professor of psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London.

In other words, the researchers suggested that any effects reported were a result of the power of thoughts, not the power of the crystals. Human mind is a powerful thing.

Lots of research shows how powerful the placebo effect can be. “If people believe that a treatment will make them feel better, many of them do feel better after they have had the treatment, even if it is known to be therapeutically worthless,” says French.

This is also called the placebo effect — the power of suggestion which have an influence on the mind and what to expect, and in turn affect the outcome.

Many physicians and doctors do believe in the power of placebo. A 2008 study found that at least half of the physicians surveyed reported using placebo treatments to help their patients.

What we think becomes the reality

And if we believe that the crystals have energy that can heal or bring us peace — they can. If we believe that they have energy that attracts wealth and money — they can.

Energy is initiated by thoughts. And the crystals can be excellent tools for us to cultivate and be more aware of our own thoughts and energy. This is the right way that crystals should be used — rather than some mysterious energy that it may contain.

We have to remind ourselves that the energy is with us. The power is within us. We would not be without energy if we do not have our crystals with us. Nor would we need crystals to recharge our energy. Crystals are tools like meditation is a tool to calm our mind.

How crystals should be used

Generally speaking, crystals with incoming energy (e.g. attraction energy) should be worn on the left hand side and outgoing energy (e.g. toxins, past wounds) should be worn on the right hand side.

For example, if you wear Rose Quartz (the love stone) on the right hand side, it could mean that the energy is flowing out . So we always want to try to follow the natural law of energy flow in our body.

Holding a crystal in meditation can be more effective than if you just sit and put your hands on knees. The presence of the crystal would help you focus in the present moment and be more conscious of the energy within and around you.

In the book of the Magic, the author Rhonda Byrne also suggested us to find a gratitude stone as a reminder for us to be grateful of everything in our lives. And this is a great example of how crystals can be used as reminder tool for us to manage our energy and emotion in a more conscious way.

I personally also like to just look at the crystals because each one of them is different — just like us human, and there is no perfect or imperfect, just being. Especially in moments when I am annoyed or in a bad mood because of troubles, obstacles, fear, challenges, anger etc, gazing at the crystals really give me a quiet moments to be silent in my own world and let answers to come from my subconscious mind.
