6 Practical Ways to Incorporate More Self Care and Wellness in Daily Life
Regardless of whether you are single or married in a relationship or divorced, it is important to take care of ourselves because the person who would be with us 24/7 is ourselves. Well, actually you know what? Forget about that, you don’t even need a reason to justify self-care. A person must master or oneself before he or she can master the others. And for us to grow in our role in business career family relationship the first thing we have to learn the self-care. Just like the instructions on the plane say: we have to put the oxygen mask to our cells before we can put it on someone else and take care of others. So anything that you want in life begins with yourself and begins with self-care. That is why today we’re going to discuss 10 practical ways to incorporate more self-care in our daily lives. #1 Clear your surroundings to achieve inner peace
Our room is more often than not a mirror of our emotional and inner state. When I am stressed with work you can simply tell by how the files pile up on my desk and how everything like the pens, stationaries, my facial firming devices are just randomly put in my room out of places. We tend to fill our surroundings with the kind of clutter we carry inside. So it’s important to detox and declutter our environment every couple of months or weeks. I aim for every other Sunday because that is when I have more time to quiet down, settle down and have some quality me time with myself.
By clearing our surroundings, we are making more room for inner stillness, peace, creativity, and productivity. Fill your space with things that inspire you, be it what you see, hear, smell, taste and feel, from what you stock in your pantry to the light that you keep at your bedside. There is a book called the Magic of Tidying Up, which inspired me that the question of what you want to own is actually the question of how you want to live your life. So, keep only things that speak to your heart and discard all the rest. By doing this, you can reset your life and embark on a new lifestyle.
I still have some of my old legal textbooks and notes with me. I thought I may need them sometimes and keep storing them in my room but I have not touched them for years and there is a thick layer of dust on them. When you detox, it is a time for reflection to see how far you have to go. From that girl in law school, I have been lucky enough to really become a lawyer even though I was confused as to what my passion is. And I keep a racing horse clock on my desk just to remind me that even if in times of doubt, don’t stop. I am either moving forward or standing still or moving backward. I choose to keep moving forward with courage. So fill your space with meaningful things and add more pleasant smelling things to your life.
#2 Aromatherapy
I have been a fan of essential oil for 3 years now after I discovered the harm fragrance and perfume does to our body. There is more and more scientific research about the effectiveness of aromatherapies and I do feel the benefits of different types of essential oils because it does help me to relieve stress, anxiety, and depression, improve quality of life and improve sleep. So, I think it is a worthy investment for self-care. The diffuser that I use is a diffuser humidifier and it also has mood light which helps me to get into a meditative state easier.
For your reference:
The diffuser I use is this one.
When choosing essential oils, you don’t need to join any membership or anything to buy it. It is not as expensive as you think. Just try to look for the pure and therapeutic grade oils because they are of the highest quality. Brands do not matter much.
The oils I use is this one, which is good and very affordable.
#3 Super drinks with superfoods
I am the super big believer to fill our body with good food because our body is the house of our soul this lifetime. Just like your room is where you live, your body is where your soul lives. So, while we clear and declutter our surroundings externally, we need to make sure we declutter and clear the internal body as well.
And it doesn’t have to be pricey but what you need is some basic knowledge about the different benefits of the food and nutrients. The time spent on learning about basic food nature and nutrients is time well spent on self-care because once you have that basic knowledge, you can apply the food according to your body condition, especially women when we have our hormone fluctuation during the monthly period. I have a separate post discussing why we have period pain and how can naturally deal with it.
My general rule of thumb is to eat as many colorful things in nature as I can in a day namely unrefined, unprocessed whole foods with lots of greens and fruits. I don’t count calories and as long as it is good food and my body needs it, I will feed it until it is like 80% full. I like to keep a little space in my stomach and not to over-eat. I feel like this gives some room for the stomach to work with and breakdown the food without problem with digestion and it won’t give that drowsy feeling after a meal.
Because there is a lot to share about superfoods, diet, and supplements, if you want full details, you can look for the posts in W Attitude publication or subscribe to W Attitude so that I can send you the updates. But just know that filling your body with good food is one of the best self-care habits you can develop. After all, you are what you eat. And our skin, energy levels, and body tell a lot about how well we are taking care of ourselves.
#4 Skincare
Definitely make time for skincare. Wash your face when you wake up and before you go to bed with low acidic foam cleanser which is the most gentle for our skin and it balances the pH value there. Make time for masks and more intensive rejuvenating treatment at home or outside. Taking time to figure out which products work best for you and be mindful of what you put on your skin by getting in the habit of reading the labels and knowing which gradients should be avoided. A fresh clean face is an indication that everything inside your body is in harmony and organised and it can surely boost your confidence even when you only put on minimal or no makeup.
Because our body is not made up of some standalone parts, rather it is a holistic system. So make sure to pay attention to your diet and listen to your body. Your body will give you feedback about which food makes it happy or not. It reflects on your skin and energy levels. Don’t force yourself to eat stuff when you are full and don’t deprive yourself of food when you are hungry. Fill it with good food and it will in return provide you with healthy, glowing skin.
Another tip to having glowing skin is to hydrate thyself. I like to add in different types of goodness to warm water to add some favor and benefits. In colder months, I add some dried rose or goji berries to warm water. Dried rose helps with blood circulation while goji is an excellent source of essential minerals and an antioxidant powerhouse. In warmer seasons, I like to add lemon to the water because it helps with digestion and it just tastes very refreshing. I also like to drink tea, especially Honey Chai Turmeric tea, Berry Detox tea, and Lemon Ginger. Ginger is so good for women, especially during period.
#5 Managing stress
Stress is part of life and what we need to do is to learn how to manage it. Everyone may have their own way so I will just share some of what I do to manage stress.
Step 1:
I would make time throughout the day to stand up and stretch, get some fresh air and rehydrate. Do something that helps me get out of your own head, even if it is for a couple of minutes. This little stretching just helps to ground myself and bring me back to the present moment and the reality rather than being stuck in my imaginary fear and overwhelm.
Step 2:
I would make a cup of tea or redirect your focus on something as simple as the warmth and smell and the goodness from holding the cup and drinking it. It’s really helpful to calm myself down in the midst of stress and reset my brain. So that I can approach the task on hand with intention and with a clear mind.
Step 3:
I go unplug for a few hours. Friends know that I disappear when I am stressed because I need quality time to work and focus. Rather than scrolling through social media as a way of escape and ended up wasting more time, I put my phone away and make sure I do one thing at one time.
#6 Little acts of kindness
A lot of people think that self-care is only about self. This is a myth. By helping others We’re actually helping ourselves to learn invaluable lessons to be classy, non-selfish women who love herself and love the people around her. There is a Chinese saying that good will be rewarded with good returns and evil will be rewarded with bad returns. If you have a religious belief, it is universal that we should strive to be good people not because we seek returns but simply because it is in our nature as humans to want to be and do good to progress the human race.
Smile at a stranger. Hold the door open for someone behind you. Give someone a compliment. Spend a weekend volunteering. These acts require no monetary investment from us and it is so easy to get involved. So don’t hesitate about doing these little acts of kindness because I deeply believe that it will reflect on us and the person we are.
